The first oil well in Apsheron shelf of Caspian Sea was drilled in 1820 in Azerbaijan. Oil era of Azerbaijan started from the middle of 19th century, and in the beginning of the next century Azerbaijan became the world leader in petroleum refining.
Proven oil reserves of Caspian region are 10 billion tons where Azerbaijan accounts for over 30% of these reserves. Proven gas reserves of Azerbaijan are 2,6 trillion cubic meters.
